Transform Scarborough

YASY has supported a group of young people through the Starbucks programme to create a vegetable garden.

The vegetable garden is located near Scarborough by a group of farm buildings with café and butchers/vegetable shop.

Reece a NCS graduate volunteers for Flying Futures, liaised with the charity, First Light Trust (who support veterans from the armed and emergency services) to develop the project.

The garden for growing mostly vegetables was achieved over a three week period in the summer. Groups worked for five days a week transforming what had been a substantial plot of waste. The site has sheds for storage and the shop on site sells some of the produce. More is sold through a greengrocers in town.

Growing now are leeks, chard, sprouts and other vegetables. In another area a crop of potatoes had been grown.

Amongst the things that were impressive were the layout of the garden with wood edging to the plots, the wire framed raised planters and the quality of the vegetables. Reece and the three girls  who I ( Marie Boyden Project Coordinator ) visited  are very proud of what they had produced and achieved, especially the scale of the project and how long it took to dig the land over to prepare.

The NCS graduates and volunteers reported on how interesting it had been talking to the ex-soldiers and were moved by their stories and how this project had helped them to recover.
